The Sexual Recovery Institute was a program in Los Angeles for individuals suffering from sex addiction that offered its services for more than two decades. The treatment center, however, ceased operations in July 2015 and transitioned much of their staff and patients to other programs. The Sexual Recovery Institute or SRI became a very prominent and highly sought after program nationally for people in need of help with their addiction problems. The program specialized in sex and intimacy disorders including love addiction and sex addiction and offered gender specific programs to encourage healthy sexuality. Prior to closing its doors, SRI was one of the longest running, premier outpatient programs for men and women with these types of disorders.
Although the treatment program was successful for a number of years, its closing reflects the growing availability of options for sex addiction treatment and different types of programs that cater to people suffering from related issues. Over time many patients felt they fared better in long term residential treatment centers and preferred having access to more extensive counseling for complex issues with trauma. As an intensive two week outpatient program, the Sexual Recovery Institute was not equipped for the long term residential care that many patients required for their recovery. Patients with more serious addictions might need a month or even a few months in the environment of a treatment center to improve their symptoms and remain stable after leaving the program.
Another reason SRI closed its doors was due to its inability to offer full insurance coverage. The Sexual Recovery Institute was not affiliated with any hospital so it could not enter the insurance market to offer the type of reimbursement that many patients needed. Now that there are many more options available for treatment for sex addiction including inpatient residential facilities with highly trained staff and rehab centers with full coverage, SRI has closed and the owner has transitioned into other programs. With the wide range of treatment centers available people can choose different levels of care based on how severe their addiction is, any co-occurring disorders that need to be addressed and the type of environment that will work best for their recovery.
